Product Name: VCON HD3000
Price: $4995
Overall Rating: 7/10
Introduction
Well folks, I finally had the time to write this (after accidently deleting it). Here goes:
VCON HD3000 $4995 msrp
Appearance:
The HD3000 (IP only) looks quite a lot like the Falcon unit that VCON has had out for a couple of years with the exception of the camera (Canon).
http://www.vcon.com/solutions/videoconfere...000/index.shtml (http://www.vcon.com/solutions/videoconferencing/group/HD3000/index.shtml)
There are two indicator lights on the front, one for power and the other for status. I read thru the manual twice and still have not figured out what the status light is for. It flashes upon remote input...
Connectors:
The back contains all the standard video connectors including inputs for a VCR, second camera, Aux audio in, etc. There is also a VGA connector-but no documentation on what it does.
What you get with the unit:
The base unit with camera
Remote
P/S
Microphone
Standard collection of video/audio cables
Manual
Features:
The units technical specs can be read at:
http://www.vcon.com/pdfdoc/eng/ds/040201_HD3000_DS_Eng.pdf
I will summarize some of the hightlights
-4 port internal MCU with speed matching (voice activated only)
-streaming capability
-data rate up to 4meg
-internal browser
-online software upgradeable
Testing:
With my limited bandwidth (cable modem) I could not give it a total workout, however, I was able to test the point to point, mulitpoint, and streaming cability. They all worked without any problem.
Impressions:
The installation was relatively painless after I got used to the idea of using the ok button (sort of like apply in windows) after menu changes. The unit natted without any problem and dialing in and out was easy. The camera movement was a little jerky for my tastes, but I am sure it had to do with my fumble fingers on the remote. I continue to be disappointed with the audio and had a far end user comment on it also. I wish VCON would spend more time expanding their audio resources-it is the number one priority in videoconferencing.
Pros and cons:
Pro: lots of features for the price, easy set up and control.
Con: not so great audio, clumsy remote, no H264 yet.
Summary:
You cannot beat this unit if you are looking for a unit that will do multipoint, streaming, multicast, and high data rates.
