View Full Version : wiring from telco lines to VC locations

We have 4 locations in our offices that we want to have videoconferencing ability in. These locations would never have simultaneous VCs, at this point, so we do not need multipoint equipment. We want to wire our 4 locations to the telco set of lines (i.e. 12 lines down to the 3 telco) so we don't have to plug/unplug each location when we are going to hold a VC. Will this work? Do we need to have some type of equipment? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

There is a manual and an automatic solution to your problem. Assuming you have at least 1 CAT5 (with all 8 lines connected)) going to each of the locations AND you don't need more that 512kb (4 BRIs), hopefully from the same wiring closet, this WILL work.

The manual one will cost you about $30 but would require someone going into the switch room each time you want to move the equipment. www.l-com.com (http://www.l-com.com/) sells this nice little device. "PMOD4S-2". This is a CAT5 Splitter that splits each pair out so if you are passing "U" interface ISDN BRI signals, it will work just fine.

It does mean that you will have to have the NT-1 at the VC equipment, but from there, you only connect one CAT5 back to the closet and all line should come up (assuming someone has switched the cable in the closet).

Now, for the automatic solution.

This is from Industry On-Line, Inc. http://www.iolinc.com/stsd.htm It's an automatic switcher that moves the lines based on signalling from the 4th pair. This means that a single unit from them can only switch 3 BRIs ($1595), they do sell a unit that switches 6 lines ($2895). I've installed several of these (Trinidad) and they worked just fine. Now, all the client does is move the system from one room to the other and plugs it in, the 4th pair signal which port to connect too.

Either one of these will work for you, just depends on how many $$ you have and how much "automation" you want to have for the switch.

Guys,
You might also want to check out the ISDN Matrix Switchers made by Covid.

jkennedy,

So you're wanting all 4 of these locations to share a single PRI without having to go to the telco closet and manually switch them correct? First of all yes that is quite easily possible. I can recommend a telco switch or 2 for you but how much you're willing to spend would be the determining factor :)

Dan,

Did they ever fix the problem where the cables were too fragile ? (bend them too much and they brake the conductor). I've installed several and reported this problem to the company. They said they were going to fix it.. has it been ?

Gary,
I doubt it, but the pinout is simple.
