As an fyi...Today I upgraded one of my spare EX codecs with the new 6.02 software and discovered that the "H.264 Video" option was disabled (after the upgrade).

This is a fairly new unit that I bought that came with the H.264 option already enabled, so I wasn't given a copy of the H.264 Video option key. I called Polycom tech support and they were able to duplicate the problem on their end. Unfortunately they aren't able to give me an option key, so the only solution at the moment is to downgrade the software back to 6.01 and wait for a new software release.

I'd recommend that before you perform this upgrade, make sure you have a copy of your options keys BEFORE you perform the upgrade.

Smoody,
Did you download 6.02 from the extranet site or get it as a fix for another problem? I ask because 6.01 is still the latest version listed on the extranet site and I’m wondering if they pulled 6.02. I’ve got a bunch of units that don’t have the H.264 key so I thought I might try the upgrade to see what has changed. BTW as a related side note I had a few units that were replaced by Polycom under warranty and the units that came back came with the keys, a nice little bonus for my trouble :)
Thanks
Tom

Hi Tom,

I downloaded it off the extranet site (while it was available). As an update to my original post: I was informed by Polycom tech support this afternoon that the 6.02 upgrade was pulled because of the H.264 option issue. They found that there was a "definite bug" in the release code that overwrote the option keys. I was also told that they should be releasing a 6.03 update possibly at the end of next week.

As far as why I upgraded - I wasn't having any serious issues with the 6.01 release; however I've noticed some video quality issues between the VSX7000 series and other Polycom codecs. I read in the 6.02 release notes that they supposedly made some adjustments for this issue and wanted to test it out.

I'm also hopeful that when I trade units in for repair they come with the H.264 option enabled. We have about 100 Polycom units and have had a real issue with serial numbers not matching up because of having to swap them out over the years and the VAR's serial numbers and Polycom's not matching up.

Good Luck.

Smoody,
Thanks for the info, good they pulled it but I’m amazed a bug that big got through the SQA tests. It almost sounds like that was a custom build for a large customer that got let out too early. Now I just wish Polycom would do a better job with notifying us about available updates :)
