View Full Version : POLYCOM ADMIN PASSWORD
I was logged in my polycom VS 4000 video conferencing system, and was doing some configuration change, when all of a sudden my UPS tripped of due to a short circuit caused by a an electrician connecting an electric plug. There was a total blackout at my centre. I now do not know the admin password. Luckly enough I know the management password, which to me look as a super user password? because I can lock out the administrator, from accessing some screens(configuration menu). I can also ftp to the vct using my management password and see all the files including the software updates password, but not the admin password!
How can I retieve the admin password???

I believe your only real hope is to "re-ghost" the system using the small button on the front of the unit when you power it up BUT, before you do that, you need to make a copy of the configuration (if possible) so you can restore it. "PolycomBackup" should be able to make this configuration and since it uses FTP and you said FTP is working you should be ok. To get it, go to the Polycom website and do a search for PolycomBackup.
To totally reset the system you need to power it off and then hold down the small button on the front of the system while turning on the system. Continue to hold the button til you get the message about uploading software to the unit. At that point you can use the standard "os" upgrade for the viewstation that you are using.
I might have missed a step so read up on it before you do it. And when you upload the new code, you WILL loose all your old settings.
Good Luck,

this may or may not be right, but there might be a setting to restore factory settings.
Alternatively, administrator passwords are often 123 or 1234, or the serial number of the codec itself.

Mazzarak,
Often, the "new" password from the factory IS the serial number (usually 6 digits/characters)... I would certianly try that serial number first! (It should be on the bottom of the machine )...
Good suggestions Mazzarak... I'm obviously forgot about that !! Sorry...

The default passwords have been tried but to no avail! even the serial number as admin password has been tried but no success. If the password has changed where is the password stored? is it encrypted?, is is possible to use the API command "Adminpassword get"? the manual says that this command cannot be used through a RS 232, so how can I effectively use the adminpassword command?

owit on the vs4000's you turn off the codec then hold down the button on the back on the opposite side on the power switch and power the codec on to reset the config it will ask for your system serial number before you can reset

Hi All,
This is my first post in this forum. My name is Narayanan and I am from India. I have been in the VC sales for the last five years here in India. It is nice to see this forum developing and lot of activity is seen.
Before trying to reboot the system using the black button. Try to reset the system by going into the diagnostic menu, and rest settings. I think this should work. In the reset option choose the options 'delete sytem settings' before resetting.
Thanks
Narayanan

In early versions of the viewstation software, Polycom ViewStation stored the administrator and software update account passwords in plain text within a HTML file. This file can be accessed through the URI http://<target>/a_security.htm.

Welcome Narayanan....you are correct in that resetting the system software from the Diagnostics window will nullify all set passwords from the current system settings....and if you think about it....this can be a potentially dangerous area for those end users who like to "play"...or for any other person from "messing around".....wonder why Polycom has not moved that feature to the Admin side...seems that would be a logical "Admin only" feature????

Carolyn,
I guess Polycom have not yet moved it to the admin settings because if it is done then there will be no way the system can be rest/password recovered.

Its early and I can't remember how...., but I inherited a Viewstation FX without knowing the password. I contacted Polycom and they emailed me how to get past that problem.
