As Customer Adoption Climbs for Video Communication Worldwide, TANDBERG Introduces Expanded Product Offerings

New multipoint unit, scalable management software and enhanced user experience meet the demands of large enterprises

New York, USA, and Oslo, Norway -- June 9, 2004 -- With video communication growing nearly 14 percent in 2003 and further strong growth anticipated, TANDBERG -- a global leader in visual communication (OSLO: TAA.OL) -- today introduced significant enhancements to its suite of products.  Satisfying customer needs for increased visual collaboration and improved user experience, the new products include a multipoint control unit (MCU) for large enterprises and service providers and new administration tools to manage growing networks efficiently.

The increase in the popularity of video communication parallels the growth of the Internet as a cost-effective delivery network.  IP (Internet Protocol) is replacing ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) connectivity to deliver video, providing the ability to have secure, convenient access to “always on” visual communications.  These factors are driving new areas of large organizations to adopt video in their daily business.

“Visual interaction is becoming a necessary component of the real-time enterprise, and the reliance on video as a real-time collaboration tool is growing,” notes Lou Latham, Principal Analyst at Gartner.  “As a result, video is being integrated into core business processes, such as training, workgroup collaboration and supply-chain communication.”

Scalability and reliability are critical to expanding visual communications within enterprise, government and vertical organizations.  Large companies like AstraZeneca, a leading pharmaceutical company with $18.8b in sales, use MCUs to connect employees from different departments for face-to-face communications.  "As the use of video increases throughout our company, it is critical that we have reliable infrastructure in place," states Anders Wikstrom of AstraZeneca.  "Having a multipoint control unit that is easily managed and can grow with the greater demand is a cost-effective and necessary solution for a company our size."

In addition to today’s product improvements, TANDBERG recently made additional announcements to help fuel the growth of video communication.  These include teaming with Cisco Systems, Inc. to deliver the first IP-based Video Telephony solution, support for cost-effective business-quality video through the H.264 standard, and the acquisition of Ridgeway Systems & Software, Ltd. for a solution to firewall traversal.

“The surge in growth of IP networks and the convergence of voice and video are driving large-scale adoption of video within enterprises,” said Andrew Miller, TANDBERG’s chief executive officer.  “TANDBERG’s scalable product offerings open a world of opportunity for these organizations. Our clients can now use visual communication in new ways to improve productivity and build stronger relationships throughout their businesses.”

The New Technology

Media Processing System (MPS) is a new multipoint control unit which enables large organizations to connect a combined total of 96 video and audio sites into meetings, and its modular design allows MPS to add substantially more sites in the future. MPS provides streamlined installation and use; reliability and scalability that will accommodate expansion; and a rich feature set that includes more standards, including H.264 and AES encryption, than any other multipoint control unit on the market.
The new technology also affords Service Providers the density and scalability they require in a multipoint unit and allows them to provide a full feature set to their customers.  The MPS offering represents the first step in TANDBERG’s new Service Provider initiative.

TANDBERG Management Suite (TMS) 9 has redefined network administration. TMS makes it easier and provides scalability for administrators to control, manage and maintain their entire video-communication network as that network grows, and allows users to schedule their video, voice and Web meetings. Key features include: new architecture built on Microsoftâ .NET Framework; intuitive scheduling with Microsoft Outlookâ and IBM Lotus Notesâ; and instant-messaging capabilities using Microsoft Live Communications Server.

New Video System Software, accessed through a simple upgrade, enhances user experience.  Key features include: scalable and dynamic directories with advanced search capabilities; support of H.239 as well as DuoVideo to show presenters and presentations at the same time, and side-by-side on a single monitor; and the H.235 v3 security standard.

Love Tandberg products.
One of their strengths is/was tech. support. But these days I am dismayed by the declining quality of tech. support. Hope its management realizes this and prevent turning its strength into weakness.

Good to know they are catering to the growing needs of powerful and stable MCUs.
