I was talking to a friend of mine recently and the topic of SE's came up (Sales Engineers, System Engineers--whatever you want to call them). He had been an SE at PictureTel along with me and when that went south, moved over to Cisco which has more SE's than probably any other company. I was noting to him that during the heydays of vtc (until the dotcom bust) SE positions were in plentiful supply at a lot of companys-not just videoconferencing. That seems to have dried up. It seems that most companies have either brought them in from the field and now host a smaller group based out of corporate, or just use the manufacturers SE's and eliminate paying for their own.

It could also be that since video has become such a commodity and setup ususally takes and hour at most (not counting unpackaging, physical set up, etc), that their is not such a need for SE's.

Just some ramblings on my part.

Hey-
I have a real job (at least today). I sent you an email (I think) but yes I will call you sometime. Say HI it Jon for me. What is 2wire? I am sort of regional (Chicago-centic) so I do not know about other resellers. Was that a video house?
Are you working again?
I know some other people that got laid off/quit in disgust from Polycom up here. It seems like it is an all Cisco crowd now.
Take care,
Paul

DISN Video Services has up coming and present vacancies in the Tampa/Miami Florida and Falls Church Virginia areas. (Sorry, you just missed the Illinois, Colorado, and Hawaii vacancies which were recently filled). The jobs are government contractor positions but have pretty steady longevity from what I've seen.

To find out more about DVS visit their website at http://disa.dtic.mil/disnvtc/

Email me or PM me thorugh this site and I'll get you my email address ASAP so you can send me your resumè

Bah. Government gigs usually mean that you will be required to have a security clearance and what not. Something I don't have at the moment. Sounds like a good opportunity for someone who's qualified. Good luck to all those who apply.

Oh and thanks for letting us know we missed the Hawaii gig!

This is a great forum!! About time we had somewhere peeps like us can talk about job ops around. Anyway, not sure if this is the appropriate place to raise this, but maybe we could have a seperate jobs wanted section.
I'm currently in emplyment, but it's always good to be able to post your crendentials and network ;)
Nice to see also that there are many companies out there looking for VC people. Looks like the industry is indeed growing!!

I think if you are in VTC support business, then career in VTC is not going to last long. It's just like an elevator operator's job. Once the VTC becomes reliable and stable, no need any support tech to support VTC.

But if you in R&D of VTC, and you are VoIP programmer then the future remains promising.

My two cent is if you are currently doing tech support to VTC , then expand your career either in Networking or integration business or go to sales or management.

In long run, VTC tech. support job is going to be as obsolete as elevator operator's job.

No disrespect intend to folks doing VTC tech support now.

but surely if you are researching and developing new products you need to have people who can support them?

I think the most jobs ever seen on this site is about 8. Any job site that only has 1 job on it isn't working hard enough :D

I have used www.monster.com with outstanding results. It got me my last couple of positions, including the one I have now. Headhunters can be used, and I have used them once before, but I prefer to do my own negotiations with potential employers.

Thats like saying IP networks are stable now and everyone has a cable/dsl modem at home so there is no need for CCIE's in the world.
