Has anybody done IP over satellite? I'm trying to come up with a solution for a mobile command center (Semi trailer). I've been looking at www.groundcontrol.com and www.c-comsat.com as an ISP, the bandwidth is definitely there, just concerned about latency.

I’ve seen a few demos and while conferencing over the link seems to work well the delay is generally a big problem for new users. As people get used to the system they seem to tolerate the delay but in the beginning it can cause a lot of confusion. The folks over at the Ohio Super Computer Center have a trailer that sounds similar to your application check out the following link.

There is a company is called Global Communications Solutions. They have systems that can be installed on top of a bus or stuck on a trailer. Press a few buttons, and it points to the bird, and you are on the air with your choice of IP connectivity bandwidth. It is not cheap... A bit buggy sometimes but if you don't have any other connectivity it will get you there.

Our only issue with VTC was not latency, but poor signal quality if you are not right on the bird. The system has to be absolutely rock solid non-movable (jacked up in the coach or trailer) and no obstructions at all... There is a delay, more than regular IP, but it did not seem to negatively affect the connection, it just took a bit to get used to a longer than normal delay...

I haven't done IP over satellite, but I've done plenty of uncompressed and MPEG compressed video over sat to know a thing or two! As with any satellite system, if you're not peaked on the bird, you'll get poor signal. Sometimes a sidelobe will work, but you really have to increase TX power. That's one indication on peaking on a sidelobe. In the video world, when you're an occasional user, you usally go up on the bird while you're talking to the satellite operator. They like to really have their hands in control! The delay is not something that you can do anything about; you're still travelling over 44K miles to do a single hop connection.

We do IP over satelite fairly often. Did a test the other day with 3 mobile units (Containers) and running triple redundancy over 3 different satelites... Used a mixture of VCON and Sony. We dont experience too much of a latency issue and the quality of communication is good.

you can't avoid the delay.. its the laws of physics.
Unless anyone here is willing to think they can defy Einstein :)

I was involved in an implementation of H.323 over satellite, in Saudi Arabia. The project consisted of a Codian MCU and 4 x Sony PCS1 systems (no gatekeeper, no need for one). The end result was excellent, however as Trapezhoid says, the laws of physics are pretty unrelenting as far as latency is concerned.
The encouraging thing though was that even though the latency was obviously there, it wasn't intolerable.

hi
I worked with one of the biggest hospital in india for settingup telemedicine project. I setup 4 point to point locations in india and the quality is excellent and seems not much delay like normal videoconfernecing.

Hi there,
I've been involved in Video over Satelit connection, I used VSAT IP modem from Comptech & connect to 3 site city & quality is good...a bit delay but still acceptable...BTW, we compare using another IP VSAT modem (Comstream), but quality is not better than Comptech....
