View Full Version : Audio Latency

I have clients that love to yell. Their complaint is that the boss wants to shut others up and the inherent latency that VTC has makes it so that he steps on others and they on him. It will take him several comments in order to get control of the mic, so to speak. I have a mostly Polycom network with an MGC 100 MCU. The issue seems to manifest itself no matter the connection or type of call.
He mentions that he doesnt have this at other "off-network" sites but all I see is that inherent latency. Any ideas?

You say that the type of call doesn’t make a difference so does that me that you are seeing this in point to point and multipoint calls? If it’s only on multipoint calls then are the multipoint calls using transcoding or continuous presence? I’ve seen complaints from users who are familiar with point to point calls when they first start using cp calls through the MCG. Generally it just takes them a while to get the feel of things and then they are quite happy. Also if you are using any high latency network links such as satellite? I’ve seen a few demos of IP video calls over satellite and the delay definitely took a bit of getting used to.

Thanks Tom. No this is pretty straight forward stuff, both point-to-point and multi-point, Bridged and non, ISDN and IP (internal network). No sat involved either.

My initial question would be, what version of software are you running on these systems ?

7.5.2 for the codecs and 4.6 for the MCU.

You appear to be running the current level of endpoint software but the MGC software is nearly 2 years old.
With the Point to Point calls being delayed too, I'd be looking at the underlying network/connections to the switches.
What kind of Ping times do you get between the systems ? (setting the ping for long packs, etc)....
Let us know what you find ! We are all learning with this IP stuff !

Since he says both ISDN and IP it sounds like we can rule out the network.
Is the problem only from a specific site? IE maybe the boss has a sick unit.
Also are you using the Polycom microphones or some sort of external echo-canceller/mixer?
I did a few tests between the Viewstations I had here and couldn’t duplicate the problem as you described so I’m thinking there is another variable we aren’t considering.
Could it be just a perception issue?
