I work in a university that relies heavily on distance education.

We have several high-end videoconferencing classrooms equipped with tandberg 6000 codec, crestron control panel, document camera, microphones and network jacks for each student station (as well as the presentor), networked computer, and 2 projection screens with projectors.

These rooms also have fiber link to a control room for routable data and video transmission.

These rooms are described as "Level 5 classrooms" and are distinguished from other classrooms, of less 'wired', lower level. But I cannot find information that formally defines a level 5 classroom. Does anyone else out there work with this term, and if so, do you have a formal (or working) definition of the term.

Thanks,
Molly

We also have several different types of rooms at our university, but I’ve never heard of a level 5 room. We have the following classroom levels:
Standard Classroom - no installed technology other than an overhead
Electronic Classroom – Standard classroom with a networked system switcher, audio system, projection system, podium, computer system, and DVD/VCR combo unit.
Interactive Video Based Distance Learning (IVDL) Room – Electronic classroom plus, AMX, codec, multiple cameras, multiple microphones and document camera. This is similar to what you call a level 5 room.
Good luck

Hi Molly,

Level V is an MIT designation, which is why you won't find it list anywhere but there.

Level I - Chalk only
Level II - Overhead Projector
Level III - Limited Technology (usually audio only - Some of these rooms have a monitor cart as well)
Level IV - A/V Crestron controlled room with 1 or 1 projectors, VHS, DVD players and Athena workstations
Level V - Distance education classrooms, Crestron controlled, used for videotaping or video conferencing.
