I've been quoted pricing for both Tandberg and Polycom systems with prices ranging from $50K for their low-end models/optons to well over $200K for near top of the line. While we haven't ruled out this approach, I need to find a low-cost business-class alternative. We're a small/medium sized company that would need basic voice/video conferencing over IP that can multipoint up to 8 sites (including India). What are our options and who are the more qualified vendors?

Thanks in advance...

While Tandberg and Polycom are the top dogs, you could check out Vcon, Sony. and Aethra. LifeSize is a new addition to the market and Vtel is still hanging on. Just make sure anything you get is standards based so that your system works with units from other vendors. If service and support is important, make sure you take that into consideration when shopping around. In this business you definitely get what you pay for. Also make sure the codec you buy has the capacity you need for future add-ons (ie. network capacity, A/V inputs and outputs). You might be able to get by with a cheap codec today, but it would be a shame to have to replace it a year from now just to add to the system.

Is this going to be for desktops, or for conference rooms?

I'm more than happy to help you with anything you need.
