I was at the SOFCOM show in Tamps this week. Not much as far as VTC, but there were some really cool technology gadgets for special forces, and a heck of a lot of weaponry. The remote vehicles were my favorite.

Oh yea, Tandberg and Polycom both had their new deployables built into pelican cases.

I can honestly say I received no questions or interest in HD at the show. I did however have 50+ people show up to the session on firewall traversal. And tons of questions and interest in solving that problem.

The ones we did include in our roadmap discussions were very happy.

ZZTop has gotten much older and they do not move like they used to...

And my flight has been delayed to leave at 1:30am. :devious:

you mean ZZtop didn't get their own booth this year? Man they must have been gutted! Though I hear Whitesnake and Steppenwolf had to go halves on theirs this year...

:dead: No interest in HD? Was lifesize there? They were there. Maybe the buzz has worn off? Or the ones looking into higher resolution H.264 have seen that all the players have announced support for it in the same timeframe as LifeSize. More people were interested in getting their calls to connect, at least in our booth.

Quite a few customers using 'other vendors' were coming to see us because of their frustrations with IP connections, firewall problems and security.

Went over to visit with Lifesize on the first day and had a good conversation with them. The technical people were helpful (thanks Simon). I was told that I need to be nicer to them on these Forums. Didn't know I was being mean. I was certainly not putting adds like 'before making mistakes with LifeSize, check out TANDBERG' on Google. The second day they sent a message over to our booth not to come by their booth anymore. So I didn't.

I can feel the love... I guess it will get interesting when they get around to shipping product.

Anyone wonder if they are making a ploy just to be bought? Or do you think they would pass that up this time after the polycom run? Sure seems ripe if you are a player like Sony.

I'm starting to get questions from my minons I watch over about these pesudo desktop units which everyone seems to have one now.

SeanInteresting... did they mention VTCTalk in particular as a place you're being mean or "that other place"?

Not quite sure where that comment came from. I guess I am being mean right now by bringing it up :ermm:

Anyway, I wish them the best of luck and hope they find a reasonable way to help expand the market and not just be satisfied with stealing market share from the companies they all used to work for.

I understand from some co-workers of mine who were able to attend the show that the Lifesize offering didn't look too good. I didn't get much more detail than that.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

well if they are your co-workers.. can't you press them a little bit harder then that? :)

What were they showing for a demo?

Re: LifeSize

When I stopped by the booth (briefly), their demonstration included a guy at the remote site shuffling some cards, spinning a roulette wheel, rolling dice, etc. (the whole 'Vegas' theme). If I'm not mistaken, their call was via IP at something close to 1920k, I think using the GlowPoint network (I'm not certain).

In my opinion, the video quality was quite impressive. The detail was very good. I'm not sure how much could be attributed to "HD" or the amount of bandwidth being used. I'm not used to seeing calls over 768k, so I cannot compare it to 'regular' VCing at 1920k.

To be honest, I think I was more intrigued by the 16:9 ratio. It seemed to give more 'presence' from the remote site.

For what it's worth, I'm in a clinical environment and haven't had any of my users inquire about "HD" videoconferencing. Perhaps it's due to lack of knowing about the technology on their part, or perhaps no one's found the application that required it to this point.

I feel like LifeSize has a good idea - I just wonder if they aren't a little ahead of the market. For all I know, though, LifeSize has polled the market and this is what the users are asking for.
