I was wondering whether anyone had run into any issues with VC and HIPAA?

We discuss patient information and review documents on a regular basis. These are point to point, encrypted discussions and are used for Quality Assurance and training. This type of review is noted as acceptable in our HIPAA documentiation.

We just deal with it depending on the situation. Primarily we use a private network, firewalled for most of our clinics. If we have to go off campus, then we either run everything over a VPN or use encrypted conferencing (if we are only doing VTC and no EMR)

From what i understand HIPPAA does not yet have specific rules for VTC. But it's in the works. I would say haveing Encryption is a good thing and seems to appease alot of the HIPPAA auditors i've run into in the industry. Least untill a VTC rule set is put in place. But i would guess encryption would be part of thoes rules.

Are they coming up with a complience specificly for VTC or will they group them in the same class as computer systems?

I know some people were pushing for a seperation of the two for HIPAA considerration.

My understanding is they are attempting to come up with HIPPA rules for Telemedicine. So take that definition as you will.
