Hello all,

I have recently acquired a new job description - VTC Manager, and have no background experience.

We have a VTC connection to a distant end using a T1 line. The VTC has been working fine for about 2 years and then died last week. Both ends have verified that the keys and loads are good in the KIV 7's. When you reset the key on the KIV, it reads - testing - low batt - key load good, but then the screen says FDX and the online button starts blinking.

Any advice on which direction I should go to resolve this problem?

Once this get's resolved, I might have a question on a KG-194! :)

Thanks.

1. I have recently acquired a new job description - VTC Manager, and have no background experience.

2. When you reset the key on the KIV, it reads - testing - low batt - key load good, but then the screen says FDX and the online button starts blinking.

1. Congrats and 90% of folks I've worked with have no VTC background before they're 'promoted' to AV/VTC Managers. (..that's what ya get for going on TDY or vacation!) :p-

2. It's supposed to blink when powered on & not in a call. When you establish your bonded call to the far end, you should hear the KIV beep and see 'FDX TR' in the display. You need to confirm that both ends are using the same/correct KIV strap settings, using same keymat/segment (use a secure phone for this!), and ensure your switches are set to secure mode if equipped.

Are you able to place a non-secure call PTP? First ensure you have good comms before you start tearing into the secure side.

11B, thanks for the reply.

We have verified the strap settings and key/seg are the same. I am not sure how to make a non-secure PTP call. Our VTC is an "always on" system and not just used to make an occasional VTC call. Our VTC is set up to always be able to monitor what is going on at the other end.

What we have is a Sony PCS P-160 connected to the KIV 7 which is connected to a T1 directly to the distant end. Is it possible to place a non-secure call, bypassing the KIV 7, with this arrangement?

Thanks.

I was going to ask how you were switching between non-secure and secure. But yes, unplug the KIV cables and butt them together.
Look at Criticom.com for some switching solutions.

I have been informed that our documentation says the line must always be secure, and thus am unable to "bypass" the KIV 7 and make an unsecure call on it.

Is there another way to test the T1 connection without going unsecure? Would this be a telecom issue?

If you're DVS-G customer, you can dial secure to any of the hub test numbers and you should be able to loop your A/V to yourself. Your KIV will sync on its clock signal and the A/V should have +/- a half second delay.

If this works then dial the DISAPAC red loop number and if you get KIV sync and loop A/V then you are GTG.

Thank you all for your help. I had tech control come look at our equipment again, and they found a problem with the modem.

Thanks.

Glad you're fixed but what was the issue with your modem?
