First off .. I am so glad I found this forum. I've been searching for one for a few days.

I am very noob to web/video conferencing and just trying to get some basic information. I mostly do general computer/network installation and maintenance.

One of my clients recently had a Polycom system installed at his home for his job. (i'm not sure of the make/model, but i can find out.)

They have a relative who lives on the other side of the country that they would like to video conference with.

Is it possible to video conference with them if they don't have a polycom system? they do have a webcam on the computer they would be using.

Like I said, I am very noob to this aspect of technology.
Are polycom systems proprietary?

if not, where would be a good place to start?

I know these are all very noobie questions... so please be gentle.

thanks,
Chris

Polycom's are H.323 compliant, which is the umbrella standard for 'business quality' products available today. If the software you are using for the PC is also H.323 compliant, it should work.

Now the next pitfall is whether or not your PC and/or Polycom are behind a firewall. If that is the case, it gets more complicated and chances are it will not work unless some complex effort is put into opening up ports on the firewall.

I agree with allan25. We spent a lot of time using various web conferencing softwares but they always had some issues or the other - whether it was the firewall issue, or team members dropping out due to net connection problems, download problems etc. They always had some missing feature that we required. After a lot of pushing by friends, we shifted to the RHUB web conferencing appliance and thank god we did that. It has support for every possible appliance including the iphone. I really suggest checking RHUB out for your web conferenecing requirements - http://www.rhubcom.com/

Why not trying online video conference using various sites which are providing this facility. Skype is also a good alternative
