View Full Version : Video Quality with Tandberg HD at 384k

Okay, I know the title sounds mutually exclusive, but I'd like to know the thoughts/experience about using Tandberg's HD systems (6000 MXP with their HD camera) in a system that will primarily only use 384 kbps on ISDN. First, I know that's not enough bandwidth to carry a true HD signal. But, I'm interested in the resulting video quality, anyway. For example, if I use a broadcast 3-ccd camera versus a 1 ccd low-end VTC camera, the image will be much better, even at the same bandwidth (384 kbps).

My thinking is that by inputting a better image right from the start (at the camera), the result at the distant end will still be better. My logic is that the HD image will be the best "start" available.

Admittedly, this is overkill for the current situation, but my customer wants to showcase this conference room and I want to position them now for an HD environment in the future. They have a legacy Tandberg 6000 right now. And even without the HD camera, the DVI outputs on the MXP will allow me to provide superior outputs to the new projectors we'll be installing. So, even that is worth it. The customer is willing to buy the parts, but I want to be able to properly manage expectations.

Thoughts?

It's like night and day :)

Best thing is to demo... Using an OLD TANDBERG camera and the NEW Precision camera hooked up to the same codec and just switch between them in a call to demonstrate the different quality. If you then are presenting the result on a projector the HD camera will outperform the old SD camera in all ways.

It is exactly as you say, the better video-quality you feed into a codec, the better the result will be, at all given bitrates.

Even if they connect to a non-HD far-end, they will notice the difference. Like Robert said, night and day.
