I am new to this videoconferencing mallarkey, and just wanted to know if Polcom PVX software is available for Macs as well as PC's. (From the Polycom manufacturers website it would appear not to be available in any version except PC-format).
Is my only option to run it on a Mac in PC emulation mode?
Many thanks in anticipation of your help!
:confused:
Try X Meeting for the MAC's, it is a free software codec that works pretty well.

There's no Mac-compatible version of PVX.

The only native Mac H.323 software client I know of is X Meeting, which is pretty good but not as capable as the more developed applications such as PVX with stuff like H.264 support. It's worth a look though.

There is also another great open source package available for you which support both H323 and SIP;

I have used this for a long time and had a good experience of the product.

You can participate in a multisite call with PVX, but the H323 client itself cannot host a multisite conference.
Many manufacturers offer hardware multisite products, please take a look at the below links;
http://www.tandberg.com/products/tandberg_codian_mcu_4500.jsp - HD MCU (Multisite Conferencing Unit)
http://www.tandberg.com/products/tandberg_mps_800.jsp - Tandberg Carrier or high capacity MCU
http://www.polycom.com/emea/en/products/network/conferencing_platform/conferencing_platform.html - Various Polycom products
http://www.lifesize.com/products/lifesize_multipoint/ - Lifesize solution
http://www.vcon.com/products/management.systems/multipoint.video/ - Vcon products
http://www.radvision.com/Products/Network/SCOPIA4001000ConferencingPlatforms/ - Radvision portfolio
All the above manufacturers provide MCU products to deliver multisite services, the above links are in summary the main group of leading manufacturers, some are better than others when comparing cost v's features. Most people on this site have their prefered MCU. IMHO Codian manufacture the most feature rich platform which I think is the most stable and easy to use. I noticed in polycom's fact sheet for PVX it mentions that it operates on Windows XP, has anyone tried this application successfully in a Vista environment?

As per my view and polycom docs. vista doesn't support PVX.
You can still have some support from following link

Here's my 2 cents:
1. Polycom PVX DOES support Vista - you need to get version 8.0.4 - if you search on google, you can find the installer
2. It is possible to get PVX to work with a Mac, but it takes some work. I use VMWare Fusion and run an XP and Vista guest on the OS X host. In those virtual machines, you can share an iSight camera (I have a Mac book, so it is built-in) as a USB device, you just need to get the XP drivers for iSight. Again, a simple google search will point you in the right direction. Also, note that to support the iSight camera within your Windows guest (also works with Bootcamp just like Fusion), you need to be running 8.0.4
Good luck.

Just for the sake of keeping things current, Codian is now owned by Tandberg. The entire Tandberg multipoint control unit product line can be found here. (http://www.tandberg.com/products/multipoint_control_units.jsp)
