My name is Belinda and I am new here. i don't know anything about this subject which is why I joined. I'm doing a project for college class that I'm in where I have to design and put together a proposal for a distance learning filming studio. I don't even have a clue where to start, what equipment is needed or anything and I was hoping someone could help me. thank you. Belinda

I guess it depends on your budget, if you even have one.

There are various techniques that can be used for setting up distance learning. A very simple idea is just using a bucket load of webcams, a few broadband connections, and lot of PCs.

You can then utilise a webconferencing tool like webex (there are many others, that just happens to be the one I know about), run the presentation through that. Then the students are equipped with webcams and headsets and can chip in with questions and answers and so on.

This is low budget. At the other end of the scale there are serious hardware options. One I'm familiar with is InSors. This is used by the JANET network here in the UK, which links thousands of schools, unis and colleges together. You have a "node" at each location, and you can link multiple cameras, multiple PCs, etc, to each, thereby getting a higher quality experience.

Go to www.ja.net, and you might find some ideas.

You can also use Tandberg, Polycom, LifeSize, and other VC equipment, but depending on your requirements at the remote end of the call, you may need more than just a camera.

If you are in a lecture hall, you might need mics at all the desks, speakers in the ceiling, cameras pointing to the speakers and the audience.

Then you might consider recording of the presentations for later playback.

Hope this helps for starters. The list really could be endless if you wanted it to be!
