View Full Version : Audio Science mics with Vortex 2241?

I have a large splitable conference room
(32'6"L x 22'9"W x 11'10"H) with mobile tables.
For audio conferencing, I have been providing
a Polycom Soundstation VTX 1000, but even
with extension mics, most of the attendees
must go to a mic to be heard.
I have a Vortex 2241 mixer that can make
and receive calls, but what mics to use in
a dynamic room? Two to three Tandberg
Audio Science mics could cover the room,
but has anyone used them with a Vortex?
I also have a Tandberg Profile 3000 MXP
cart for this room, so that's something
else to integrate with the ceiling mics.
Thank you,
Mike

Honestly the AS mics would work best if you went into the MXP 3000 directly with it then lined out to the Vortex. Or just use the 3000 for audio conferencing. Two things are needed for the AS mic to work. AGC (automatic gain control) and a very good Hum filter (removes ambient noise from the room) . Also you need to support 24 Volts Phantom Power (not sure the Vortex does that). All of those are in the MXP unit. So it's much easier to just plug into that.
I cant help you much with the Vortex since i have yet to try hooking one up to the AS mic.
Hope that helped some.

Hey Walker
I have used the Votex and is an excellent choice for audio conference. It does have Phantom power,AGC, Echo cancellation and a full range of E.Q.'S. However I have never used the Mic's inquestion and would recommend you check the spec's on them too see if they would be a good choice for the space you have.

We also use AudioScience mics all the time with great results.
I don't think I've used them with a Vortex yet, but I have with XAP 800s, XAP 400s, PSR1212s, etc...

We recently installed four rooms that have a Vortex 2241 and (1) Audio Science mic. Two of the rooms have the Tandberg Edge 95 and just went into service. Of the other two rooms, one uses a Tandberg 3000 and the other is a 880MXP.
All work great and while the AS mic is extrordinary, it does its limitations. The client especially notices when the person speaking turns away from the mic for whatever reason. Obviously more noticable the farther away the person is seated. I advice their is no substitute for good proximity to a mic. That said, these mics are the perfect fit for these rooms because the client preferred something that would locate on the ceiling and we had tried multiple Shure MX202 in another install and those were not as effective as the AS mic.
About the only major complaint is the large silkscreened characters printed on the plex that are not removable. Everytime we install one the client asks that we remove these but they are silkscreened on rather than vinyl.
I would like to hear from someone who has installed (2) AS mics in the same room and the success with doing so. What I have read from Tandberg seemed to frown on doing this and its not easy to experiement with doing this kind of thing.

we've been designing our own mics based upon the boundary principle with great effect. Even to the point of making them into eighth space mics and using multiple units in the one room.
If you make your own you can delete the silk screened logo :)
Ours have been integrated using the Biamp Audia and Nexia systems using their echo cancellation, with mix minus sound reinforcement, so people on larger tables can hear both the remote party(s) and the person at the other end of the table.
The technology of the AudioScience mic is not proprietary to Tandberg. Crown released the information to the public over twenty years ago. Tandberg just have it nicely packaged.

I have been told that Tandaberg has an AS mic availble without the logo.
Let me know if you want the part number

We actually make more profit by making our own :)
And also have the ability to adapt the microphone characteristics (pickup pattern) to suit the individual purposes. There are times when you need something different.
