Hi All ,

I just learned that there is a new network which will start in this summer called the Grid. It's invented in Geneva and it is said that it is faster than the current broadband internet. I would like to know what effect this could have on videocnferencing industry. Will Polycom like codecs will become obsolete ? as people can use webcam like things to do video telephony Or polycom will work even better with it on IP and ISDN will go out ? it's exciting , would like to know everybody's opinion on this GRID ,thanks !

New innovations in kitchen appliances did not end the relevancy of restaurants. If people want a conference done right with the best equipment, videoconferencing professionals will still have jobs.

I also read somewhere that the GRID will not be readily available to the general public or corporations any time soon. It will only be available to governments at first. Of course, once they are finished exploiting it and running it into the ground, we can use it. IMHO, as far as our industry is concerned, HD videoconferencing over fiber has the potential to be better than anything the GRID can offer.

I have to tell ya that I agree with you 100%. From what I have seen, you are talking about at least 3 or 4 techs on either side of a GRID conference and an un-Godly amount of hardware and bandwidth just to support one conference.

Cool... but not reasonable at this time for many organizations.
