Hi,

Though things generally work correctly with my VSX and 3 PVX clients, the primary users of the VSX have expressed a strong disliking of ~how the audio sounds~ ... which I can somewhat understand, it is just a tad Charlie-Brown's-teacher sounding in some respects. To my ear it's just how lower-end digitized audio sounds, generally, and I noticed the audio rate was only 48k.

Curious to see what the maximum potential is like, I tried a call from PVX to VSX at 1920k and was a bit shocked to see the audio was only 48k, the same as is used on 512k calls.

So I just wondered if anyone knows whether 48 the highest audio rate available? Or is there perhaps a way to force it to use a particular - higher - rate for audio (80 would be nice) and then whatever is leftover for the video?

k, a little more specific info ...

on the 512k, regular-user and my test 1920k calls, the audio shows as "Siren14_48" ... are there any other options that can be configured that might provide nicer sounding audio? other codecs or higher rates?

I notice when I connect to one of Polycom's own vsx8000's they make available for testing, the audio shows as "G.722.1C" format and wonder if that might be something to try and use. (nobody was around at the time for me to converse with, so no clue what it sounds like)

edit: ok, i see now that Siren14 is an implementation or rebadging of G.722.1C. So I guess things look bleak.
I wonder if upgrading the VSX software to version 9 would make any difference (currently 8.7.1).

I think my first question would be, what kind of speakers and microphones are being used with the PVX? If we are connected to a laptop, the audio is no better than what the Laptop can produce (Play some music videos and you'll see what I mean.)

Siren audio has the ability to have much more fidelity than we can typically hear.

Just for fun, try a good set of headphones on the PVX side and see if that helps (It should).

I typically don't have audio issues from my PVX to my VSX3000 with no issues...

Cheers,

The most heavily used PVX machine is a desktop located in a small-medium sized conference room ... using the built-in mic of a logitech webcam...

I also posted over at WR forums and they had similar high regard for Siren14_48, so I guess I'll accept that it's probably not the codec.

Over there they also suggested that having PVX set to use the WinXP's internal echo cancellation could negatively affect audio quality. Guess I'll test it in a couple configurations and see.
