I am considering this option here (http://dlink.com/products/?sec=0&pid=302) for a phone solution.
Theorethically, could I make a ISDN call between a VTC unit (ie: Tandberg 1700) and a commercial number with this kind purchased Dlink unit set up on the back end?
From what I see, the basic protocols are there for communication so I don't foresee a problem. My Tandbergs run off a IP VLAN and eventually migrate to a IMUX across ISDN lines...
... this should work, right?

Hi, Nubio,
Dlink H.323 phone usually does not support gatekeeper, It use a private directory server to support the E.164. It is a closed system.
So if you want to connect Dlink phone with H.323 protocol, you need a H.323 proxy(like a gatekeeper, which is more expensive than Dlink H.323 phone ) to route H.225 and H.245 signaling to the destination ip of Dlink phone.
If you really need a video phone, you may take a look at Creative inPerson.

I took at look at the Creative InPerson unit, it was impressive. My question now is where can I find a proxy that will negotiate these necessary protocols?
Also the network that I am currently on only runs H.323 to connect initially but my protocol knowledge is a bit lacking. I know that we use a Tandberg Codian gateway to transcode from our network layer to the ISDN layer (unsure what protocols we are talking about in this aspect), so wouldn't either of these two units (Creative InPerson or Dlink) work correctly as long as they were able to hit the ISDN layer as well (and have the H.261/G.711 basic protocols at least)? :silly:

The Creative InPerson has both SIP and H.323 version firmware. Maybe you can ask Creative to test it with your ISDN terminal.

Okay, that sounds reasonable. I've never actually contacted a vendor before about something like that, so it didn't even occur to me. LOL.
Thank you for helping me out.

I was able to demo the inPerson two days ago. The vendor informed me that there was no current H.323 firmware version although they are working on it. In the spec sheet there is also no mention of H.323 only SIP.

I think one approach can be to go straight to the Chairman of the Department of your previous specialty in Russia and ask to follow a team of residents as they work. Ask for a 2-3 week, than try to stay for longer.
