I would be very interested in some discussion, discovery and decent resources for vc peripherals related to Telemedicine. Right now...the only "true" telemedicine practice we have experienced is with our cardiac CICU. Our Cardiologists will perform live consultation/diagnosis with a partnering Harrisburg, PA hospital's CICU and the staff Cardiologist there. They connect the Echograph unit (may be termed differently) directly to Polycom through the svideo connections. The Polycom sits on a "telemedicine" cart with a 27" video monitor and vcr. They store it away when not in use.
The first time we actually participated in this kind of event, it was an amazing experie4nce for me personallyu. because we are strictly a children's hospital and instead of the far end recording the the procedure to a vcr tape and fed exing it to the doctor....there it was...a teenie tiny baby's sick heart from miles away and the doc was able to direct the attending doc at the far end...i felt like we "landed on the moon"...
We also do a lot of educational seminars for various departments, campuses and outside locations on a reocurring basis..so far these have all been traditritional presentation set ups. However, with the more experience and exposure comes the desire to expand into greater medical communications utulizing more complex tools. We interface with various locations of the Mayo Clinic and their capabililties do go beyond ours. The interest is now filtering ino our enterprise and I am constantly seeking avenues to meet the needs of the growing requests.
as a matter of fact, we were asked to provide vc capabilities for a special event we are hosting in September whereby a medical specialist (not sure of what at this point) was to come from Japan as a our guest "visiting professor" and intends to perform an operation. We needed to equip the operating suite with one of out Polycoms and connect to our Lecture Hall through IP for the audience. Unfortunately, just as we were preparing to do some "mock set ups", it was learned that the event had to be postponed due a scheduling conflict on the doctor's side. But, as a result, I am now receiving further inquiriesd about this capability on a more permanent basis. We do not have this integrated on a permanent set up.
On another side, we are getting inquiries from different departments throughout the multi-state campuses to research the opportunities for integrating such peripherals as microscopes for video and xray interfaces.
Lastly, we are getting involved in remote home monitoring of patients for the more rural areas that are under the care of our clinic in Pensacola, Florida.
I am responsible for the technical side of our vc network and am constantly trying to educate myself and others on the technology involved in telemedicine events. Because I have a slightly "hard time" with some vendors (I do not care for the salesperson who is trying to "sell" me....I have been on that side of the fence with this technology and never conducted business in "selling" as a means to an end $$, And was quite successful in really listening and providing what was "right for the application" from every avenue of the customer/organization. i also spent time as an integration end user trainier/designer so product knowledge is more important to me. To round out my stance on "selling" I got involved on service of the buiness as a service engineer in both remote and onsite technical troubleshooting/resolving and installation for most of the major players throughout the 90's. that made me an absolute believer in the critical value customer service plays and that a "sale" is the result of the relationship developed between the two with this technology....i worked for a very successful broadcast av and vc integrator that was bought out by a, then leading, vc manufacturer).
My point....I am seriously investigating providers of telemedicine enhancements to help me meet the expectations our growth as an accredited childrens' healthcare provider requires. I am the first member of a small, but growing vc team that prides itself onestablishing a sucessful vc service for our hospital, clinics, partners, and associated outside practices. Our positions are highly visible and carry a great deal of responsibility in delivering a trouble free connection in each and every event.
If you are a vendor of such products don't hesitate to contact me....,,provided you do not possess the "slaesperson" charictoristics I have so openly detailed above. If you are a user of such technology, please by all means, share your experience with me....
Sorry so long...but i wanted to fill up this lonely and empty forum catagory!! LOL
