To all:
I was having lunch yesterday with a fellow video advocate and the subject came up of the lack of using video while being in the industry.

It has always amazed me that we do not "eat our own food" yet we promote it, analyze it, and (somethimes) are consumed by it.

I try to do a video call every day and try and promote that mindset.

I would implore this user group to set up a capability (list, phone book, database) to use video within this group.

I will start out-- my video IP is 24.15.81.65. It is a Polycom 512 in my temporary office in my basement. Its on 24/7 and anyone is welcome to dial in and say hi. I have Comcast cable so the optimum bandwidth is 192K and below.

I can agree with the theory that there is a habit of not using the services we provide, but then why do mechanics always drive beat up cars, and why do plumbers never get round to sorting their own bathroom out?

Case in point, we have people from Sweden, Singapore, and the USA in our office today...

I have 9 bridges at my disposal, but my personal system is a decidedly ropey Sony PC conference on 128k. I can be reached (when it's on) on ++44 1635 821702 (x2)

I think it's a great idea to share information, make new friends, who knows, maybe even make a little cash... ;)

Hey pbraatelien,
This Paul from an a/v company who did business in the Rolling Meadows, IL area? The name sounds very familiar. Anyway, just signed up with vtctalk, this is a great idea and I hope it gets put to good use. Looking forward to see how it evolves, talk to you guys soon.

Hey Paul,

If this gets enough interest I'll program a web based database app where users can search by location, language spoken, etc. and add a link to it from the main site.

Good idea.

I think this is a great idea! Not only can it promote the use of the equipment, but this can also allow for other users to interface with different systems and technologies to enhance the evaluation process. Personally, I have Polycom VS 4000, ViewStation H.323, Sony PCS-1, iPower 9800 and Polycom ViaVideo addresses at my location that we would add to this type of database.

Aloha everyone,

While I think that it is true that we don't always use what we have I think it is good experinece to experiment with a variety of equipment in various configurations over various networks so as to have the background experience to make valid recommendations to end users as well as management types.
I am located in AIea near Pearl Harbor in Honolulu and have a variety of codecs within arms reach which can be used for this purpose. They inculde a Tandberg 2500 dual 27" cart system, a Polycom VS-7000 with an 42" Sony plasma, an Aethra Gold with a SOny 50" rear screen, a Aethra desktop video phone Maia NX, 2 Tandberg 1000, one with wireless card slot and one without, a VCON VIGO, a couple of Picturetel Venue 2000 codecs, and a Tandberg 6000 in our show room downstairs. Interested to hear any experience tales of technical types and where to find the holes not to fall in.
The company name is The Audio Visual Company at www.theavco.com where my photo is under the staff button with the other folks.
Anyone interested in testing can reach me there or go direct to my e-mail address at amahikoa@theavco.com.

I think that web based data app Is a great idea.

I have a ViewStation H323 (test unit) at 217.9.140.56 my privat unit is at 217.9.140.62 but its a Vigo and tends to be unresponsive if I leave it on for along time.

I live on Iceland btw, if you whant to test the quality over internet.

I agree with the notion of praticing what you preach. So, for what it's worth, I'd like to add my contacts to the database. I don't yet have anything setup at home (hoping to get an old Tandberg working!!) but I have a Tandberg 1000 on my desk at work. PM me first if you'd like my video numbers.

Hi everyone,
I just signed on today and I like what I have read. 'Educational TV Services' has helped pioneer distance learning in Oklahoma and colaborates with other states and countries. We love technology and we love to play with it. I have a Polycom Via Video unit on my desk top (runs H.323 up to 384K). I do not keep it turned on all of the time but I would be glad to test and talk with any or all of you. My IP number is 139.78.118.16
I think the posted user group would be nice as well. I would like to have contact information for end users. We have people call all the time asking can you do a conference with???? It would be nice to have some contacts around the world that we could ask. :D

I agree having a nice V/C contact list would be very helpful. By the same time I’m not sure which address I would publish lol. You might want to check out http://www.vide.net
Which is an international network of gatekeepers. One of their next big projects is a searchable endpoint directory.

I wouldn't be able to release my system's address, due to network security issues, but if I ever get a system at home, I might give it a try...I'm looking at possibly buying a ViaVideo for my Desktop...

WOOOOO HOOOOOO!!!!!! Just purchased a Poly 512 for the house. i will post the dial-up information once I have it on the network. It will be IP only at at least 384k. I am also working on throwing together a gatekeeper for use by the group.

OK guys I think we have over 200 views in this section so I think it's safe to say there is interest. I'll get to work on coding a database app this weekend. Hopefully I'll have a BETA ready by Monday.

Michael, since you're such an "Experienced Technician" what about a product review? :D

Hi Folks,

Codian has an interest in helping the proliferation of Video. We have an IP Video MCU/Bridge at a colocation center on the internet. We would like to offer it's use to the members of this forum to conference together without the need for gatekeepers and the like. It is a great solution for ad hoc conferences.

If you are interested, let us know and we can work to come up with a good solution.

Regards

OK.....Got my Poly and its up and live. The ip is 68.50.96.57. Feel free to dial in. I will try to leave it on auto answer during the day (east coast US), and have the TV pumping in through the VCR ports. Should be good for 384k.

Dialed in and looked around. Is that in your home office?Mine is sitting in the middle of my basement-as soon as my office gets done I will have additional cameras and stuff on it.

Yea, that's my home office. Please excuse the mess. If your VTC allows it, you can switch my input to VCR and get CNN to check audio. How was the connection?

Actually I am on a Polycom 323 so I was able to switch back and forth. It looked fine, the audio feed sounded fine. I left it on the CNN feed.

I just ordered a couple of Sony EVI-D30 cameras, so I should have a second camera hooked up over the weekend. I will try to place it in a window so everyone can check out the weather in Maryland. I am also still working on that gatekeeper.

My Poly 512 system is up. I can be reached at: 68.50.96.57
I have it on 24x7

You can also register to the VTCtalk gatekeeper at: 68.50.225.125

To see who is registered, telnet to the gatekeeper (68.50.225.125).
For the password, type: vtctalk
To see the list of registered endpoints, type: sh gatek end
When you are finished, please type: exit

Codian has also set up a conference for VTCtalk and registered it with the gatekeeper. Once you register, just dial: 333

Let me know if any of you have difficulties.
