View Full Version : ECHO when audio link is added

Has anyone experienced voice feedback/echo, when engaged in a video conference, either point to point or multi-point, and an audio link is added (800# and leader code) for participants that cannot get to a video location? 20 minutes into a video conference, the video rooms connected experience feedback/echo. Is it a build up problem in the mics/codec? I've had to disconnect the audio link and reconnect only to have the feedback/echo problem return. The audio callers do not hear any echo or feedback, FYI, just the participants of the video conf rooms. Any help or similar experiences out there? thanks!

It would certainly help to know what kind of equipment you are using, what kind of network the call was placed with (video) and what version of software is on the equipment. Then, maybe we can help you resolve the issue.

Hi lee_db,

Again as Gary stated it would definitely help to know at least your basic equipment set.

That being said audio feedback is one of the key problems I face in day to day conference monitoring. Our network will allow a hodge-podge of pretty much any H.320 compatible equipment to connect. Unfortunately sometimes due to different settings in different room configurations there is no way for you to control the audio levels coming in from different rooms in real time (well that depends on your equipment too but...)

Until you provide an equipment set I'll recommend the following basic fixes...

-Always build conference set up time into your call length to help troubleshoot last minute hickups such as this.

-Have the audio link person mute their mic/phone until they are going to speak and mute it again afterwards.

-Have the audio link site ensure that there is as little room noise as possible and to work with you by adjusting their volume settings during conference set up to eliminate feedback.

It sounds like what you're saying is that it starts out fine but just suddenly starts echoing during the call and you feel this may be system build-up. Before I went that route I'd consider that maybe something might be happening in either room to trigger this such as 1 or more sites adjusting audio levels mid conference because they can't hear. Feedback is almost always caused by overdriven mics or speakers..

Again get back with us and let us know your set up and what the voice dial in site is using as well.

Are you using any type of echo cancellation, Gating devices on the microphones... Gentner???

I had that problem in a couple of rooms with Viewstation 512's, and there is a patch from Polycom to resolve that issue, but its a beta patch. Check with you tech support (Goldseal?) for information on it. I believe it Beta 7.5.3, if I remember correctly.

tjulian is correct in that the fix is the ViewStation release 7.5.3 beta. We had the same issue and could not figure out what was wrong. Finally someone went to Polycom with it and they gave him the beta. I wish that this information had been in the Polycom Knowledge Base.

I had this issue on all my viewstation products, VS 512mp, 128's. Polycom still has not given me a solution but has noted by econf4u there is a beta 7.5.3 that resolves most of the issue. ( I got Review Video - Gold Seal to push the software to my codecs) I still notice an echo every one in awhile right at the beginning of a call. A disconnect of the audio call and then redial usually fixes this. At least it does not build up to an echo 20 minutes into the call like the previous software did.

Gold Seal also stated that the new FX software release was supposed to fix the issue with the FX unit.
