I installed a Via Video codec on my PC and am having a nightmare to get it to connect. I'm running XP SP1, which Polycom says is fine with their version 5.1 software. I do have two NIC cards in my PC, one connected to the Internet and the other connected to my personal LAN. (This way I can shut off Internet to the LAN to annoy my teens).

- I have disabled the XP firewall
- I have disabled McAfee (just to test of course)
- I have diasbled XP Internet Connection Sharing
- I point the Via Video to the Internet NIC

When I boot with Win2K, everything works great. But with XP, it just will not connect. Polycom has not provided a solution to date. The Via Video loads and configures seamlessly and registers with Polycom's Global Address Book. Just rings and rings and rings and rings.......

Anyone else out there with ideas or experiences?

dndtech,

Ok, I user a VV all the time from my XP Home, Pro, etc... with no issues.. So, lets see what's different...

You do see ringing ?? (implys that port 1720 is open) ? It sounds like the port coming back is not being opened.

Since it works just fine on the 2K stuff... Looks like the inside wiring is good...

That is very strange, can you temp remove one of the nics and see if that is the issue. ?? I've never run a VV with dual nics...

Also, a little known fact... There is a file on the VV system "VVTraceLog.txt" that lives in Program Files > Polycom > ViaVideoNG that may help you diagnose the problem. (also a new application with 5.1 called VVLogViewer that allows you to apply filters to this log to make it easier to read).

Hope that helps you out.

Hi dndtech,

I wonder if it might be an issue with TCP/IP filtering. We have a few Via Videos where I work and we were having problems when there was any TCP/IP filtering. When we 'permit all' (in TCP/IP advanced properties), it was OK.

I hope this is helpful.

Hi dndtech,

When you say you boot the Win2k and everything works do you mean that you dual boot on that PC and when you boot with Win2K your VV works fine?

Is there anyway you can test the VV internally on your LAN to see if it works in the other direction? I'm thinking your problem is in the actual configuration of the VV software itself since you can connect to the directory on the net. It's like when you boot up with XP something is switched off either in the VV software or the TCP/IP setting like Gary and mdr suggest.

You might also check the internet options control panel. I’m thinking that windows is confused where to send the traffic. I have used the Via-Video in the past on a laptop that was using wireless and wired (but not at the same time). As I recall when switching the connections (XP should do this automatically) you needed to restart the via-video to cause it to redetect the wan settings. Basically when it’s set to auto it should detect the wan address when it starts up. BTW I’m assuming your pc also sitting behind a router?
Hope this helps.
