We seem to have a bunch of problems (poor audio mostly, sometimes feedback etc.) with Getner XAP800's. Anyone else run into these? I was looking at the Polycom Vortex the other day anyone have any experiance with the two?

Morgan,

Do you use MM100s or any type of echo cancellation devices alongside your Gentners?

side note: some of you refer to the Gentner as the ClearOne ;)

I'd be interested to find out what it's connected to... Videoconferencing system ? Room audio system ?? Most VC systems have a built in Echo canceller and if you don't turn them off, you can have a problem...

We run main audio systems through it as well as our vc systems. No external echo cancellers in it. Never saw a difference when the codec's echo canceller was turned on. I was just wondering if anyone had worked with the vortexes and getners and could give a comparision of the two.

have used them both, I do like the vortex for the ease of setup.

sounds like you need to look at your clear one audio matrix. If you are having poor audio, more than likely you have the zones set up inproperly. you have to be very careful using audio matrixes. If you have re enforced audio going into you mike you will have feed back hince (zones) are needed. Also check out the freq spectrum that you are using. Remember human voice is 300hz to 8k. But there are a lot of other things that does not fall in that range that can cause problems. Those other things are also included in your conversion from anolog to digital. These freq have to be digitalized HINCE The standard value of a quantized wave is indicated by a series of coded pulses that give the modulating wave's value at the instant of the sample.Mu law PCM Sorry getting back to lamen terms
It is common that feed back is generated around the 1k range But there are alot of other freq that will generate problems. Hollow sound may comes from not enough of lower freq rang. You just have to play with it. Also always use echo cancelation if you have it. it only helps. Also as far as your zones. If you are talking in the mic, Do not have your voice comming out of the speakers close to the mic's that you are using. Your gates on that mic are already open!!! :)

I would
1.... check the zone layout of your room. Change the re enforced areas (zones)...
2.... work your EQ to push good solid sound without hollow tones or feedback. you may have to try various things but . surely that is where your problem. ;)

I may be a bit late and just joined the board (great stuff here), but you can call Gentner - ClearOne's Tech Support for assistance. They are great at helping folks out and even doing remote diagnostics.... 1-800-945-7730.

I use both ClearOne/Genter and Vortex products. The Vortexes (Vorti?) are a bit easier to set up and allow matrix routing etc. from the front which is handy if talking someone over the phone with changes. The Genter XAP units have more functions available especially when using multiple units but they cost a bit more. Audio quality seems roughly equal as does the service of both companies. Realizing this is just my microscopic view, we've had 7 Vortex units die to various internal problems over the past 4 months, some out of the box and some have been installed for over a year . . personally as a result of that I'd recommend the XAP products.
