I have a VS 512 (H.323) that is about 3 years old and have recently switched from our LAN over to a VLAN. I keep getting major packet losses (audio & video) when in a conference or just plain connected to my MCU 100. Network admin tells me it because the unit is running at 10 MBps - Half Duplex. I am currently running sowtware version 7.2 (which I downgraded from 7.5). All of my VS4000's and FX made a smooth transition becuase of the Advanced Lan settings option (100 MBps - Full Duplex) but, this option can not be found in the Admin Setup of the 512. Can anyone give me some much needed insight into how to solve this problem?

Begging the experts,

David

My understanding is that the Viewstation is limited to 10 half by its hardware. We use several of these units with V-LANs and we typically set the switch to auto negotiate. Now I have heard a lot of reports on other forums about users having to set the switch ports to 10 half, but with our switches (mostly Cisco 3500/5000 series) we haven’t had this issue. As for the software I’m currently running 7.5.2, but we also ran 7.2.x with success.
Hope this helps,

Tom nailed it. The ethernet port on the ViewStation line is limited to 10-half by the hardware itself, not the software.

Thanks, Tom and Steve for your Help. I'll just replace the 512 with a FX.

Thanks again,

Hi David,

Tom and Steve are absolutely right. The settings of ethernet port on the ViewStation line is limited to 10-half by the hardware.
But I don't understand what for to change 512 on FX? If your switch allows to change settings on port of switch, do it. It is much easier than to change one unit to another.
We use VS512 over 3 years. It connects to Cisco 4000. The port on Cisco 4000 sets to 10/half and VS512 works fine.

Good point oleg. The network admin should be able to configure the port to run 10-half...that is, unless you just need a reason to upgrade to the FX..:D

Incase of the VLAN,
The switch can be configured and the 10 MBit .... will do the trick ... i guess..

Check to see network traffic for the video / Audio quality .

One more thought...
The packet loss occur due to the media problem... your VS is transmitting the data OK.
same for the receiveing switch...

Hi Guys,

Please ensure that VS512 support only 10M/HD. As far as I know, it is 10M/FD. It's only SP series which has 100M/FD and VS series till VS 512 has 10M/FD.

On the Polycom site there is nothing about duplex, only about speed:
"Specifications of the Ethernet ports on a ViewStation product:
ViewStation 128, 512, DCP, and MP are 10 baseT
ViewStation SP, SP 384, EX, FX and VS4000 are 10/100 "

On the Cisco site:
"The Polycoms are hard coded at half-duplex and 10Mbps." They speak about Polycom ViewStation 128.

But as far as I know ViewStation 128 and ViewStation 512 are one class products.
Except for that I determined it (speed/duplex settings) by experimental way before I have found these the documents.

I think we you have a look at the datasheet of any of the VS series, things would be clear.

I think we you have a look at the datasheet of any of the VS series, things would be clear.

Let's look at datasheets. I started to work with this ViewStations more than 3 years ago.
Datasheet written in 2000:
Ethernet/Internet/Intranet Connectivity
10/100 Mbps Ethernet Hub
Datasheet written in 2002:
Ethernet/Internet/Intranet Connectivity
10 Mbps Ethernet Hub
Remains only 10Mbps (correct). But nothing about duplex. May be I looked not there... :(

I realize that this is a dead topic, but i am looking for some help here. I am having the same issue the first poster did.

The port is set to 10HD and we are still seeing collisions between the VS512 and the switch. Anyone have any ideas on why this may be happening

Thanks,
Danny

Verify that you have the same setting in the SWITCH-PORT as on your Polycom unit.

They MUST match each other.
